Researching the UFO Phenomena Using Multidisciplines
Jerry Sievers Interview with Steven Hile
Segment 6 The UFO Phenomenon Considered
Part 1 UFO's................Modern Times, Critters and the Aether
Jerry Sievers: After completing five Segments on various subjects we should be approaching a point where we are ready to turn our attention to an in-depth look at the UFO phenomena itself?
Steven Hile: In the previous Segments we reviewed a number of disciplines and what is occurring within those disciplines. Here in this Segment we will begin to pull these disciplines together. First we will review a top investigators research and comments to get some previously not-mentioned perspectives. Then we will look at the information we gave in the last Segment 5, how it applies to the UFO phenomenon and bring in additional supporting data. From there we will look the information given in Segments 2 and 3 again and at what has occurred in those disciplines in the time since our review of them. Then we'll look at several UFO incidents for more background and tie-in information. Then finally we need to pull our references together for an overall picture and see where that is pointing us.
JS: What are these previously not-mentioned perspectives?
SH: The UFO phenomenon is one which has many facets to it which always drawing more interest and attention. The barriers to solving the UFO phenomena do not seem to be one of investigation or documentation, but more one of approach. There are many publications and websites purporting the truth including publications on professional organization web sites. Former MUFON International Director John F. Schuessler in his publication "Unconventional Flying Objects (UFO): Why the Mystery Isn't Solved" says the phenomenon has not been dealt with as a real-time mystery but rather in a historical sense. In researching the 1896/1897 airship (UFO) flap in the Midwest, Schuessler stated that the technology observed in most of the sightings was just a bit ahead of what was available in that era (before the Wright brothers). Airships were not yet a reality in 1887 although there was research into them. There were balloons in use but they were generally smaller than the reported air ships which were also in some reports equipped with various lights. UFO reports from every decade since the 1940s have had similar characteristics. Schuessler's 1970 symposium paper reflected on the technology issue: "UFOs, Just Beyond the State-of-the-Art" where he wrote "it appears nothing much has changed since 1897".
Schuessler then list a series of observations and interactions and then goes into an integrated "future think" approach to the problem. He says "investigators throw out anomalous inputs. We may need to take another look at the anomalous data, because that may be where the breakthrough information actually resides." Perhaps Schuessler's most important statement is "In ufology there has been a tendency to trust (believe) in a select few experts. There is nothing wrong with this, but it results in a narrow view of the mystery and is not conducive to solving the problem. A cross-disciplinary approach could be more productive. Are there interactions of another kind? We may recognize the major interaction; but we may be missing the subtle interactions that could lead to answers."
The lack of the cross-disciplinary approach is a big one. Few such disciplinary references can be found; most only in published books. There are certainly enough sources purporting to some presumed truth. One only needs to search UFO internet sites or listen to late night talk radio to hear numerous (some stunning) hypotheses. Most all of these become questionable when the various disciplitions we are reviewing here are applied.
The "technology" issue John Schuessler alludes to above is "important" but unlocking this mystery is one of pulling together various "key" items from the various disciplines. Futurist's planners use historical data as a roadmap. Technical planners and engineers use the same approach but always with various selections from new sources to achieve new developments. There are numerous disciplines which have been used separately but few have been use together. Why? Perhaps it's one of agenda. Perhaps one or more disciplines leads off in a direction the writer or researcher does not wish to go. Perhaps it's the discipline itself, one which is not well understood, one which is taboo, or is "just not to be considered." Or perhaps it's a discipline which is misunderstood either intentional or unintentionally. In any case in ufology there seems to be plenty of directions leading any where but in the direction toward possible answers.
JS: How do you see the above information apply to the disciplines covered in the previous Segments?
SH: In support of previously Segments, we can easily show recent new findings in those disciplines supporting that which we previously posted; i.e. particularly in naturalism and the astronomical sciences (affecting the probability of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis). New technology and research are giving us daily scientific releases. It's most exciting to see new data supporting and building on data already presented. For instances the Segment 5, Part 3 just completed, aether finds support even in UFO publications; i.e. UFO Magazine, August 2006. In that publication in a 21st Century article on Wilhelm Reich the author's state "It is easy today to see that the majority of Wilhelm Reich's observations and conclusions about UFOs conformed to the best contemporary knowledge on the subject, and the reports of his sightings resemble those of countless other individuals both then and now."
We have amazing support that we are on the correct course here. That there is no or little inclusion of the aether in popular ufology would appear to be one more of ignorance and agendas. There is no denying that in the United States the extraterrestrial hypothesis is by far the most popular. That however does not make the hypothesis a fact. In virtually every other part of the World different theories are prevalent. For instances in Israel Barry Chamish, a political writer who for a time studied UFOs in that country published a book titled "The Return of the Giants". That book reflected and applied to UFOs the long standing belief of giants in Hebrew history. It seems in Israel they see giants related to UFOs and in the United States and other western nations they see little gray guys. And this thesis is only put forth in Israel and does not cross boarders into the Arab or Palestinian world. South America has still different slants which seem to strongly parallel the paranormal.
JS: Lets get to a key question. In reference to the aether, how do you understand the way it presents itself in the skies and results in the objects that are known to ufology?
SH: There are a number of data related items we need to pull together first before its possible to give all this believability. Wilhelm Reich's work received creditability from ufology and of course predated that of Trevor James Constable. Further now that it is the 50th anniversary of Reich's death, there has been (at his request) a release of his remaining works and their exhibition for researchers to review. It seems Reich wanted the release of his available work to a new generation in a new time. We are seeing a major push today to bring Reich's work out. Nearly 300 boxes of his unpublished papers that were in storage at the Harvard Medical School are available now for the first time. The American College of Orgonomy held a conference and dinner coinciding with the anniversary. Reich's work in the various disciplines is really quite astonishing when one takes a close look. You can get the feeling that it fits in quite well with the subjects we looked at in Parts 1 and 2 of Segment 5. Perhaps Reich was not one of the great mysteries to come out of the twentieth century but rather was 50 years ahead of his time. It is interesting to note that recently a regular on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Mehmet Oz stated that energy healing will be the new healing medical wave of the future.
Trevor James Constable in his book and latter work was following up on Reich's work and provided numerous graphics and data. In "Cosmic Pulse of Life" he provided his beliefs on what he was observing; i.e. that there are two origins for UFOs. One origin is that they were biological and inhabited the Earths atmosphere. The second origin is that they are extraterrestrial and that they, the extraterrestrials, have harness the aetheric energy. If this is the case they would need to exist in a state of no mass. This would be the requirement in a Universe of three dimensions of space, one of time, energy and mass. In higher order space/time dimensions this may well be the case which can be shown in mathematical concepts.
Under-supporting this is the almost unknown factor that the aether is included in Einstein's General Relativity theorems. General Relativity has been shot at unsuccessfully by scientists hundreds of times even before it was postulated by Einstein. It therefore ranks today as the best test theory in all of physics if not science. That Einstein never threw out the aether speaks to its position within the theorems. That it was actually postulated into Special Relativity speaks to its mysterious inclusion today and why it continues to be shot at.
JS: How do these descriptions transform into the one hundred or more UFO object shapes reported today such as discs, triangles, boomerangs, ect.?
SH: In Reich's and Constable's work UFOs can be described as opaque like and irregular, organism like, and other dark or illuminated sky forms. There are no clear photos of solid disks, triangles or other like objects. In fact in all of ufology there are no clear photos of such objects. All such photos are either unclear, grainy, fuzzy or subject to questionable reliability. All clear photos published are drawings or rendered photo graphics. Then there is the dilemma of witness sighting descriptions not matching photos taken of the same event. Indeed having two or more witnesses describe the same event can lead to somewhat different descriptions. What this points out is that it is difficult to take photos of this phenomenon, or get matching description. Further it is almost impossible to do video tapes which almost always show improbable and vague images. That may sound trite when you think of "U" Tube UFO videos. However where this subject is concerned "U" Tube is just another source showing the video technical trickery possible.
There are a number of considerations we need to understand first before we can make sense of the data Reich and Constable give. First the cloud buster devices seem to bring these anomalies into visibility during weather research experiments. Second Constable made many infrared film exposures capturing many objects which were not visible to the eye. Infrared film is sensitive to heat and energy sources. Constable took his pictures from the ground and from the air. He actually took trips on commercial air flights to take pictures out the aircraft windows at high altitudes. The implication here is that these anomalies are invisible and present in the atmosphere, that they may well reside there as may be the case with Constable's critters. That is an implication which may be unsettling and difficult to believe because of our learned knowledge. But then that is what this phenomena has been since it became acceptable in the modern age.
The captured presence of these objects in Constable's work time frame was only on infrared film. With the advent of the charged coupled device (CCDs) and their potential extended wavelength it would not be surprising to see current digital camera images of such objects; indeed that may be the case for one report on the Indianamufon.com web site; see "Oval Illumination Appears On Digital Camera Image." Click on image at left or Year 2007 UFO Report page. A link to other web sites which show video and radar images of strange objects and occurrences near the Earth and in the atmosphere is given on the left bar. Introductory comments and related tie-ins to Constable's critters is given.
The question could be asked; are there any records of such critters or objects previous to Reich's and Constable's accounts? The answer to that is there are some accounts which sound very similar. The links at left to 'The First Flying Saucer!' and 'Attack on Everest' are such accounts given in Constable's book 'The Cosmic Pulse of Life'. These accounts tell of such objects observed in the 1920's. While they sound strange and unbelievable the case for critters (or space animals) in the early 20th Century is further supported by an US Air Force release on April 27, 1949:
"The possible existence of some sort of strange extra-terrestrial animals has also been remotely considered, as many of the objects acted more like animals than anything else. However, there are few reliable reports on extraterrestrial animals."
This release, which may have been originally intended as the opening wedge to further revelations of observations made by USAF aircrews, was unwelcome in ufology. Space ships had become idée fixe, and nothing biological was wanted to disturb or modify the basic extraterrestrial spaceship hypothesis.1
At the other extreme stood the original skeptic, Dr. Donald Menzel of Harvard University, eternally ready to discharge his self-appointed duty to debunk UFOs. He did not like the USAF "space animals" release either. In his book Flying Saucers, he took exception to this release. He pointed out that even one reliable report of an extraterrestrial animal would be sufficient, let alone a "few" as the USAF had implied were in existence. What the USAF has in its secret files in this connection will not soon be revealed. Suffice it to say that the USAF uses infrared photographic apparatus and detectors extensively, and penetrates around the clock into the stratosphere with piloted aircraft.1
The question then is why are these critters not visible all of the time? Visibility is limited to the visual wave length range which the human eye is sensitive to? There-in may just lay a key to the phenomena. With the lay public its easy to understand why such phenomena is going to be commonly doubted. However there are many things invisable to the human eye; air and all the components of it, sound, etc. The visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum is quite narrow as can be seen in the graphics on the left bar. In useful terms the visible spectrum wavelength lies between 400 to 700 nanometers. Radiation energies within this range will generally be visible while those energies below or above this range will not. Visibility is a matter of visual electromagnetic energy (light) interaction with matter. The links on the left bar will help explain such interaction.
To be visible an object must be matter. Electrons orbiting within atoms of matter are now known to be raised to higher energy levels when exposed to radiation in the visible range. Thus if an object is comprised of some type of matter, in visable light it will be visible. An object not composed of some matter would not be visible. Matter must also be large enough to resonate or absorb visible light. Too small and the matter is invisible such as water vapor and other elements in the air. The interaction of radiation with matter at various wavelengths depends upon the wavelength and is generalized in the links on the left side bar. Shown there is how matter does not react the same at other wavelengths as it does at visual wavelengths. Energy which exists in different forms does not react with radiation energy at any wavelength.
Infrared (IR) wavelengths are in the range of energies separating the quantum states of molecular vibrations and is absorbed more strongly than other wavelengths including visible wavelengths. The result of infrared absorption is heating increasing molecular vibration. Infrared wavelengths are used extensively for night vision, in optical switching and a host of other applications. It is this range which Constable's critters were detectable on film. The detection of images in the IR is that of energies emanated by the physical mater, not the physical matter itself. The implication now is that matter and the objects we are talking about are two different things.
A note about terms:Generally the term photon is used interchangeable with the term wavelength with the use depending upon the exact subject to which it is applied. Generally either is usable with both understood to be the same form of energy. Further explanation can be found in the links on the left bar.
In the 'First Flying Saucer' account above, Constable states "the witnesses were pilots and trained observers. They saw the objects in full physical density and in light-reflecting negative polarity. A result of their training and flying in their early era of flight." In any other circumstance they may not have been able to see the objects. In all reality such visual viewing in the IR is beyond that accepted by modern science (Naturalism). That however does not change the very real probability of their existance.
What these witnesses viewed was disk like, pulsating and a light source. It had a mica-like shell and appeared to be injured. It issued a metallic froth which later melted in the sun. This is not unlike the descriptions for numerous UFO encounters and it's not the only such descriptions in history. Constable relates a story from Australia investigated initially in 1962 by biologist Ivan Sanderson. Sanderson traveled the world looking for evidence for visitation from space. He relates an instance in his book Uninvited Visitors(2) of an enormous object described as similar to Wood's that had washed ashore in southwestern Tasmania. Accompanied by a government zoologist he intended to get samples of the objects flesh. They were unable to do so because they could not even cut the thing with an ax and there were no signs of decay. Following their attempt the Australian government placed the location off limits to everyone. Noted in the account is that others had the same problem with the object. There are numerous other similar reports to this one in this region of Australia but secrecy has surrounded these occurrences since.
It would seem we are now in deep water for explanations to these reports. Based on the above information the objects were visible to the human eye. They had various forms which were disk like as well as otherwise. They apparently had solid structure beyond any on-site capability by humans to take samples of their make up. One appeared to be living (biological) in one case and living but dead in the other case. Constable makes the further point that these objects if air born, visible and seen from a distance would appear as disks, lights of odd shapes or that of the typical UFO sighting description. The objects Constable photographed were invisible to the human eye yet visible to infrared components such as film and photo optic devices. Constable never describes seeing a object with his own eyes.
UFO reports are largely made up of pulsating, glowing, super-performing, discoidal objects, largely conceived by Ufologists to be ships. To that we have added glowing, discoidal objects that appear more like amoebae and other forms. I would like to expand and add support to this data. On the left-bar under "Hile Critique", are four subject references which relate to and support the subject data given here. In the first link More Critter Forms and following links I review some strange data; first relating to videos showing anomales moving very rapidly in the Earth's atmosphere, then what some call Soft Spot Openings, some very strange weather Radar Ring occurrences over southern Indiana and Kentucky, and then some surprising NASA Space Shuttles videos originally shown on the NASA channel. All four are also linked together at the top of each Critique. In the following paragraph I summarize of the four critiques and give some relationships.
More Critter Forms is similar to the Constable's Critters detection and data. Here they only show up on the current state-of-the-art video. The anomalies move so rapidly they show up as blurs on the review dvd video frames. To the human eye they are not detectable, not only from their movement, but are also visually according to the researcher. Softspot Openings appear to be some type of window or gate from which anomalies can either enter or exit from some space/time related realms. Such occurrences have been witnessed and the space shuttle videos show such occurrences. Radar Rings show there are some strange occurrences in the atmosphere radar detectable which are massive in patterns up to 90 plus miles and appear non-symmetrical weather wise. What they relate to and why is puzzling. The Space Shuttle Images speak for themselves. The luminous anomalies were huge in some cases, moved rapidly and decelerated, some moving into electrical thunder cloud cells.
Taken collectively these critiques show similarities in a number of aspects which relate back to the data presented in this and the previous Segments. Different in major aspects they still share many connections related to the UFO phenomena. As we have been describing in this multiple discipline approach there is data which points to a number of strange existences which are above our day to day existence. Existences such as constable's critters, soft spot openings and radar rings are a hard buy but there is data which supports their existence. Again it comes down to the nature of the "critters" and the accumalated data can tell us alot.
In order to draw some comparisons to this data, the well studied 1965 Heflin UFO photos and accounts link on the left-bar link may show some correlation. The Heflin photos are believed by some to be one of the clearest ever obtained. They have been investigated over the years using ever more developing technology which continues today and have never proven to be false. (Of course there are always those who claim otherwise, e.g. a "wheel" from an electric train? I had electric trains as a child and the train wheel rim and body ratios are wrong in these photos.) According to Mr. Heflin the disk which he photographed emitted a smoke-like vapor as it moved away. A ring of bluish-black smoke hung in the sky at the same altitude and azimuth as the object's position before it rapidly departed. The smoke ring was began to bent out of shape by light winds but had a "solid" appearance; it did not dissipate like ordinary smoke. We do have a similarity here to critters in perhaps a transformation from a solid appearance to ejecting a secondary irregular form.
To science (and most of us) the idea of unseen objects is unapproachable despite evidence now existing to the contrary. Ufology in its extraterrestrial mind set has no acceptance of changing physical density and substance transitions. Only structured objects are acceptable and the scientific sought. But after 60 years that is not what the data says or points to. There seem to be rigidified biases that have some overall signatures (or influences) seen in the political and in some scientific arenas. All this seems to be behind a veil which hides a truth no one wants to deal with or bring out into the open. The extraterrestrial is a simplified and acceptable explanation and makes for a good front for what hids behind it.
Up to this point here the idea that certain UFOs as living organisms is the concept of Trevor James Constable. Constable however assigns the initial concept to several authors including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Fort. Doyle's "air jungle" in his Horror of the Heights and Fort's critters in his Book of the Damned are examples. The first early scientific thought referencing this idea to UFOs according to Constable was probably the late Meade Layne and John Bessor. Meade Layne published The Ether Ship Mystery and its Solution now out of print in 1950. Layne was also founder of Borderland Sciences Research Foundation, Inc. known today as Borderland Research Association. Theorized here is the arena of the ether and the aeroforms that reside there. Constable stumbled across Layne's hypothesized concepts when he photographed them. Layne's extensive theories and descriptions mirror many occurrences known today in ufology. His work was ostracized early on by the media and others and put into the metaphysics category. John Bessor did research into UFOs and viewed them to be animals or living creatures. Charles Fort also believed "unknown, luminous things" in the sky may be "living things" that occasionally come from somewhere else.
The idea of unknown, luminous lights or objects in the sky to be living creatures is of course not within the realm of modern science. That they may have some of the characteristics of animal behavior seems to be the rationale for those ascribing this theory. Other described characteristic such as the hardness and density of the matter is also not rational but can be found in the theories of Meade Layne. The above data now needs to be taken into account and considered in reference to the various disciplines we've been reviewing. One such area is living cells; what are their structures, what controls them and what sustains them? The naturalistic discipline we reviewed in Segment 2 now becomes all important. Further we are going to find that while Naturalism has an imposing opposition to main stream Ufology, it has surprising underlying similarities to it.
What is known is that in some circumstances the human eye may be sensitive to the infrared range or ranges outside the visible. One such theory Constable analyzed was a probability of this could be associated with altitude, use of oxygen and other stresses. The "Attack on Everest" description is an example where a credible witness was at a high altitude and admitted to stress. Other similar accounts associated with mountain climbing and flying can be found. These accounts have been attributed to hallucinations by science but Constables Critters make a new point for them. Interestingly Rudolf Steiner indicated a relationship between the element oxygen and the human astral body. This is an aspect which relates back to Segment 5, Part 2 Understanding the Energy Modalities. This references to viewing energies existing in states beyond the space/time relationships in which we exist.
